The story behind Self Care Club

It was burnout in its truest form. I was overworked, overwhelmed, and the hits just would not stop coming. I felt absolutely hopeless, and lonelier than ever. I wasn’t showing up for my kids, my husband, family, my friends, and most importantly, I wasn’t able to show up for and as myself. I had no breaks. No time for myself. I felt completely buried in problems I didn’t know how to solve, and I felt like a burden leaning on the people in my life. My fatal flaw is doing it alone — and it caught up with me in a big way.

I opened up about my struggles to my pseudo-business partner here at the cafe, and she took action in the form of an appointment at the wellness spa down the block from us. She booked a 45 minute facial for me — and much to my surprise, it quite literally changed my life.

know what you’re thinking. How could a facial really fix everything? Well, it wasn’t the facial that fixed me. It was being cared for. It was someone seeing me and taking care of me and relaxing for not even a full hour. It was a break. It was time to think, rest, and reset.

And although I left my appointment with the same problems I had before going in, I felt like I could handle it.

Then it dawned on me: surely I’m not the only mother who feels this way. So how can I help others the way I was helped? I started putting together the idea of a Self Care Club — a place for caregivers to come and relax for just an hour while someone else watched their kids, and they enjoyed a service or focused activity that left them feeling seen and cared for. I reached out to some friends and fellow business owners and asked if they wanted to help. They said, “YES!”

I hope from the bottom of my heart that we are able to support caregivers and parents with the Self Care Club and provide them with the gift of relaxation. They always say that you have to care for yourself before you can care for others, but sometimes it feels impossible. Our hope is to make it possible for you.

Thanks for reading my story.
